BETWEEN THE RAIN AND THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS
Taken on a rainy evening down the street from Kelly’ s Ice Cream on Fern Creek Avenue in Orlando. I wasn’t looking for any particular shot that day, but driving home, the rain had given my familiar cityscape a feel of the silver screen.
Traffic lights blurred to red and turquoise orbs on the wet pavement. In front of me was an old Ford truck. Its weathered surface and antiquated curves made me feel like it was from another era. The people inside were only shadows to me. Existing, but unknown. That intrigued me. Who were they? Where had they been? Where were they going?
For a few minutes they could have passengers on a film set with no director. I took a few shots of the truck, changing my focus to sharpen or blur different parts of the image. In some photos, the Ford is front and center. In others, it fades away into raindrops and sunlight. I feel like the collection of photos together give a sense of how an otherwise normal night in Orlando can feel like a memory, or a still from a movie that never existed. All you need is rain, some street lights, an old truck, and a camera. I had one in my hand already anyways.
