THE FAMILIAR FACES OF THE STABLE


While visiting my parents' farm outside Philadelphia I took a moment to photograph some of the animals who help define the place.


There was no production or shot list, just time spent exploring with my camera. Walking the familiar grounds, I kept an eye out for the faces I know wait patiently along the paths, behind fences and near the barn. Each character approaches the camera in their own way. One cat observes quietly from atop a stone wall. Another decided he had quite a bit to say about my visit. The goat glances over with serene curiosity and the horse positions himself against the open sky filling my frame with his presence.


My favorite thing about these images is that each small interaction is filled with character. A look, a shift in posture or a perfectly timed gesture can speak volumes - curiosity, confidence, patience or maybe just a bit of attitude. Capturing the stable was also a way of documenting my sense of home.


The animals that live on the property tie into the landscape and rhythms of my childhood. The portraits are an uncomplicated observation of what makes this place feel lived in - and returning there always feel like coming home.
